YORK, Maine — The York Harbor Motel and Cottages, owned by Bob Poulin and his family for the last 34 years, has sold to Taylor Perkins and family of York.
Taylor Perkins and his father, “Sonny” Perkins of York, said they have big plans for the site. Growing up in York, Sonny helped to bring the surf culture to town, and he still surfs York and Ogunquit to this day.
“I have wanted to buy a hotel on Long Sands Beach my entire life, and when Rick approached us with this opportunity, we felt it was the perfect fit. We aim to do as good of a job with the south side of Long Sands Beach as our friends at Crane Hotels have set as a standard with their concepts the Stones Throw and Viewpoint Hotels on the north side of the beach and at the Nubble.
“We are beyond excited to get in to this project this season, and even more this fall to re-launch it next spring under a new flag”, said Taylor Perkins, the new owner.
Represented by Rick Cosseboom of Anne Erwin Sotheby’s International Realty, Taylor Perkins and his partners Chelsey Mortenson and Will Steakley of Austin, Texas have other hotel projects in Nashville and Austin under their company Howdy Hospitality.
Plans for the York Harbor Motel include two resort-style pools, completely renovated bungalows and rooms, and a new F&B concept. A nod to York’s deep history and ties to the beach and the local surfing culture will be one of the most exciting aspects of staying here, the new owner said.
“My father is a wealth of history of the area, we plan on exploring all of the amazing photos and videos he has of the beach over the years. That history and those locals of York deserve to be permanently installed in the hotel as monuments of how much this area contributed to surfing on the east coast,” Taylor said.
Sonny resides on Long Sands Road in the Perkins family home of 114 years. “I drive and walk the beach every morning, and have always had some great ideas for what this place could become. It’s great that I get to be a part of those changes with our family. This is going to be a fantastic project we’re excited to create some local jobs with, and some great places the locals and tourists alike will enjoy coming to,” said Sonny.
The York Harbor Motel sale was represented by Jeffrey Jellison of Century 21 Atlantic Realty. Financing for buyers provided by Kennebunk Savings Bank. Legal for the Perkins family was provided by David Ballou of Ballou & Bedell, alongside Jeff Clark of Clark & Howell for the sellers.
