Sports shorts: Santamaria a finalist for Becky Schaffer Award

The Maine High School Girls Hockey Association has announced five finalists for the third annual Becky Schaffer Award, which is bestowed annually to Maine�s most outstanding senior high school girls hockey player, and this list includes Traip Academy�s Sophia Santamaria.

Santamaria is a senior forward for the York/Traip/Marshwood co-op team, which on Wednesday night advanced to the Southern Maine semifinals with an upset win over fourth-seeded Portland/Deering. The Wildcats will face Scarborough in a semifinal game Saturday (5:20 p.m.) at the University of Southern Maine.

Other finalists for the Schaffer Award, which is the girls� equivalent to the Travis Roy Award, are

Hannah Woodford (Cheverus/OOB), Camree St. Hilaire (Lewiston), Maranda Guimond (EL/Leavitt/Poland) and Leah Walker (Greely).


DeNiro outslugs RSA Realty

ROCHESTER � DeNiro Development broke a 5-5 tie in the third period with four goals to beat RSA Realty, 9-6, in recent Rochester Men’s Hockey League action.

Tom Gillum had three goals for DeNiro (14-3-0), while Chris Atwood added two goals and an assist. Chipping in with a goal and an assist each were Arnie Bennett, Matt Robertson and Eric Peterson, while Josh Anderson had a goal and two assists. Doug Larson had two helpers. Mike Sullivan made 29 saves in goal.

For RSA (7-7-3), Jamie Ferullo had three goals and an assist. Tim Ward had three assists. Troy Anctil, Ryan Ellis and Kam Trepanier also scored. Steve Stripto stopped 34 shots.

Buffalo Wild Wings tightened the race for second place with a 7-2 win over Leavitt Electric.

Kory Ferullo had a hat trick for BWW (7-8-2), while Logan Lachapelle, Cody Stevens, Stu Ferguson and Matt Keene each had a goal and an assist. Connor Merrill had two assists. Brett Howell stopped 40 shots.

For Leavitt (7-7-3), Josh Terry had two goals and Owen Allen added two assists. Tyler Briand made 26 saves.

Clemento’s Pizzeria held off Zoeller Realty Group in the nightcap, 5-3, behind two goals from JT Fortier.

Sean Desmarais had a goal and an assist for Clemento’s (7-10-0), while Casey Goodell and Matt McGilvray also scored. Derek Colwell made 23 saves.

Steve Fowler had two goals and an assist for Zoeller (4-11-2). Tim Puls added a goal and an assist. Lennie Foss stopped 25 shots.


2020 February Vacation Baseball Camp

STRATHAM � This year�s February Vacation Baseball Camp will be held on Feb. 24 and 25 at Cooperative Middle School, offering instruction in all areas of the game including hitting, fielding, baserunning, pitching and catching.

Each session, which will be instructed by director Bruce Joyce, area coaches and current high school players, will begin at 8:30 a.m. and run until 12:30 p.m. The cost is $35 for one session or $60 for both sessions.

An emphasis will be placed on fundamental instruction, skill development, positive reinforcement and fun! Coach Joyce has offered this popular camp since 2009 along with his holiday vacation camp and summer camp in July. Joyce has over 30 years of coaching experience, including 21 years as the head coach at Southern New Hampshire University; he is currently the assistant varsity baseball coach at Exeter High School.
